NASCAR Road Racing is a budget reskin of the stock car portion of Andretti Racing that can't decide if it wants to be based on the 1998 or 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season.

Also, despite its marketing and title, there is an oval track in the game, although it is loosely based on the Rio oval track with road course-style elevation changes instead of banked turns.

Unused Drivers

DAVEY.BMP and CITGO.BMP in the TEXTURES folder are Davey Allison (a recurring NASCAR legend appearing in EA Sports' 1998/1999 NASCAR games) and Michael Waltrip's 1998 Wood Brothers cars, respectively. No legend drivers appear in the game, while Waltrip uses Philips.bmp instead, reflecting his move from Wood Brothers Racing to Mattei Motorsports in 1999 (although he actually uses Geoff Bodine's 1998 car, since it appears as a Ford while Mattei switched to Chevrolet for 1999).

Andretti Racing Leftovers

Hmmm...
To do:
Which executable strings are used in this game?

A number of leftover data from Andretti Racing, including parts of data of tracks not featured in NASCAR Road Racing, can also be found throughout the Data folder, except for data pertaining to open-wheel mode. These (including the Indy car mode strings) can also be found throughout the game's executable, as well as references to multiplayer mode that was in Andretti Racing, although all mentions to that game has now been updated to mention this game instead. Also, it is worth noting that saving-related strings are actually used in NASCAR Road Racing, as it does support loading and saving of certain data files.

Another example is IJUMBO.BMP, a small graphic for an Indy car that was featured in Andretti Racing found within the driver texture graphics, but not used here. Curiously, its stock car counterpart, SJUMBO.PNG, is not in this game's files.

1998 or 1999 Season Game?

As mentioned above, the game does not appear to be able to decide whether it wants to be based on the 1998 or 1999 Winston Cup Series season. Evidence for this can be found throughout the files and the game (any driver that were not mentioned here use their 1999 season elements, unless otherwise mentioned):

  • Mark Martin's car in the title screen and menus has the NASCAR 50th Anniversary contingency logo on the A-pillar that was used only in 1998. However, this could be because by the time the game was released in May 1999, none of the two road course races in the NASCAR Cup Series calendar had yet to be run.
  • Darrell Waltrip's car is the Tim Flock Special car (as featured in NASCAR 99 and NASCAR Revolution, but without the NASCAR 50th Anniversary logo on the hood, presumably to hide the season confusion) he ran in 1998 after Speedblock infamously left his sponsorship dry and the death of Tim Flock that season. The name of his texture file, DWFLOCK.BMP, supports this, but his team is listed as Travis-Carter Motorsports, his 1999 team.
  • Ward Burton's Caterpillar-sponsored car is named MBNA.BMP and Ernie Irvan's M&M's car is named SKITTLES.BMP. Both refer to their 1998 sponsors, although Burton's readme in the credits refer to his 1999 sponsors (and Irvan's credit is missing for some reason there).
  • Dick Trickle appears as-is from his 1998 season appearance; Trickle became a journeyman driver for 1999, while Donlavey Racing (Trickle's 1998 team) had the infamous Big Daddy's BBQ Sauce sponsorship circus in 1999 and thus neither appeared in EA Sports' NASCAR games for the 1999 season.
  • Michael Waltrip's car that he does actually use, Philips.bmp, is actually Geoff Bodine's 1998 car, since it was run as a Ford and had MCI as the rear decklid sponsor. Michael Waltrip's 1999 car was a Chevrolet and had Philips HalogenA on the rear decklid.

Reflecting all above, some of the licensing credits in the readme refer to their 1998 season entries. The following are the affected drivers:
