Regional Differences

Title Screen

USA / Europe Japanese Korean Chinese
Guess Vs. Mode isn't that important The trademark is now registered Guess it took longer to get to South Korea Wonder what they were doing for three years

The trademark wasn't registered quite yet in the international release. The Japanese, Korean, and Chinese versions each have a subtitle (in their respective languages), while the Korean version exclusively has a copyright date of 2006-2007 instead of just 2006. The Chinese version has the 2006 copyright plus a 2009 iQue copyright; this is because iQue released it in China.

Revisional Differences

This also covers changes between regional versions that are not related to localisation. The last version without the change and the first version with the change are used for the compare box headings. See also: Build Date.

Levels

Hmmm...
To do:
Compare the differing levels programatically - the following things were discovered by manual comparisons

Japan

USA Japan

Two of the nodes in Dorrie's path are in different positions.

One seemingly pointless gap was filled in, but weirdly, some filler tiles were removed, creating a different pointless gap.

A decorative tile's length was reduced from two to one.

World 5-B
USA Japan
NSMB-5-B US.png NSMB-5-B JP.png

The ceiling in the Star Coin enclosure was removed, and the left wall increased in height. This may have been done to make it possible to escape if you entered the enclosure and were sealed in by one of the Brick Blocks.

USA Japan

A hidden coin block object had its width reduced.

An empty space above the level was filled in.

World 6-Castle
Elementary, my dear Cactus.
This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Why was this done? Also which version has this change?

The tall room with the boss door was moved from the main area to its own area.

World 7-A Area 2
Hmmm...
To do:
Upload the sound for the Squigglers exiting pipes.

The level's sound set was changed from 0x7 (contains general sounds) to 0x17 (contains general and Squiggler sounds), which enables the sound the Squiggler makes when it comes out of a pipe. Squigglers only appear in this level, meaning the sound is essentially unused in the USA version.

World 8-6 Area 1

The level's sound set was changed from 0x7 (contains general sounds) to 0x9 (contains general and castle sounds), which enables the "Mario dies by falling in lava" burning sound.

Europe

World 6-2 Area 2

An object that allows the camera to scroll into a 16x16 Area containing no other tileset objects, was added to the first 16x16 Area, presumably to prevent camera glitches.

World 7-6 Area 3
Japan Europe

To prevent the player from going above the pipes, the pipes were extended and an invisible solid object was added.

World 8-Tower Area 2

Bowser Jr.'s parameter at nybble 8 was changed from 0x0 to 0x1. This setting isn't fully documented, but has something to do with Bowser's Jr.'s running behaviour.

Removed Files

Hmmm...
To do:
document all these

Japan

The Japanese version removes one of the unused levels.

Europe

The European version removes some unused files:
