Mario Kart Wii/Unused Bones & Animations

To do:
Document the rest of the early animations found by Atlas. Zach#2169 on Discord has some GIFs if anyone is willing to upload them and format the page. In particular, document:
  • Add Bowser's early animations on Karts, as well as Standard Bike L / Flame Runner / Spear. For Wario Bike / Shooting Star / Phantom, some animations seem to be switched in comparison to the final version.
  • Daisy's early 1st (seems identical to Peach's used animation, likely a leftover) animation for Mach Bike / Sneakster / Dolphin Dasher.
  • Daisy's unused biker outfit has two animations called pc_hair_drive and pc_hair_wait, which are only used by Peach for her hair movement (Daisy's final variant of these animations are called ds_hair_drive and ds_hair_wait), which explains why her hair does not move when restoring this model. This is likely a leftover from Peach.

Koopa Troopa's and Dry Bones' Wings

The Koopa Troopa character texture, in which we can see the unused wing textures.

Koopa Troopa and Dry Bones have two unused bones named wing_l1 and wing_r1 in their model files. While the bones aren't used in this game, they were used in the game's predecessor, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, as Paratroopa's flapping wings, since both Koopa and Paratroopa shared the same model in that game. These were probably just leftovers from when Nintendo ported the Double Dash!! model to Mario Kart Wii. The bones aren't referenced in any of Koopa Troopa's or Dry Bones' animations, so if someone were to hack a texture over the bones, they wouldn't move.

The fact that Dry Bones has the same unused bones as Koopa Troopa implies that its model was based on the latter's.

Baby Princesses Cap

Baby Daisy and Baby Peach share the same bone structure as both Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. This isn't unusual, as it saves time for the developers of the game, but what is unusual is that the "cap" bone for the baby princesses isn't weighted to move their crowns around when doing tricks and the like, as would be the case with Baby Luigi and Baby Mario. Instead, the crown is part of the "face" bone, despite the crown itself being modelled in such a way that would make it possible to move. If you were to weight it correctly in a 3D model editor, it's revealed they have a unique animation for the crown. The losing animation will jiggle the crown as the Baby Princesses cry.

Luigi's Test Animations

Located within /Race/Kart/mdf-kart-lg.szs (Luigi's Standard Kart M) are 4 unused animations for Luigi. Two of them show Luigi putting his foot on the gas and brake pedals (there are no animations for this in the final game) and the other two are him punching to the left and right. These seem to be leftovers from Double Dash!!

Lakitu's Battle Sign

Lakitu has an unused battle mode item called jugem_battle.brres, inside /Race/Common.szs. The animation seems to be a copy of the backwards animation in VS race, but with an X on the sign instead of a U-Turn. The animation's name is "jg_st" which probably means "stop" (For reference, the name of the "going back" animation is "jg_no"), so maybe was supposed to appear at the end of battle when all the karts stop and wave the sign? (similar to how he waves a flag after you finish a VS race)

Funky Kong's Tie Bone Leftover

Funky Kong has a bone named tie_1, which is a leftover from Donkey Kong's boneset, due to the developers using him as a base for Funky Kong. While the bone is animated (since both Donkey Kong and Funky Kong use the same animations), it is not rigged into any part of the model itself.

Peach, Daisy and Rosalina's Skirt Bone Leftover

Peach, Daisy and Rosalina have a bone named skirt_1, which is used for their dress model found when playing with karts. This bone, however, is also present on their biker outfit variant, which goes unused.

Peach and Daisy's Leftover Hair Bones

Both Peach and Daisy have 4 bones in their boneset called d_hair_1, d_hair_2, p_hair_1 and p_hair_2. The first two are used only by Daisy, while the last two are used only by Peach.

Early Character Animations

Some of the early "_2" vehicles found in /Race/Kart/ also contain unused animations for the characters.
